The following simple steps will add a Desktop Shortcut to your Windows PC, so that it is easier to access Globalstar Dial-Up Networking,

XP and Windows 2000:

The connection is usually available via the START menu, in the “Connect To” link on the right-hand column of the START menu. However, depending on how the PC has been setup and Windows has been customized, sometimes the START button doesn’t show the “Connect To” item on the right hand column.

If the “Connect To” item is not available on the START menu:

Press the START button

Select Control Panel

If the Control Panel is a matrix of icons (Classic View), select “Network Connections“
Otherwise, if the Control Panel has a header entitled “Pick a category” (Category View), click on “Network and Internet Connections” and then click “Network Connections“

Right-Click on the network icon for the Globalstar Dial-Up Networking connection and select “Create Shortcut“

Shortcut should now be available on the Windows Desktop

Windows 7:
A) Open the Network and Sharing Center by either:

Right-click one of the NETWORK icons in the system tray of the Windows 7 toolbar (usually in the lower right corner)

Then click on Network and Sharing Center

– or – Click on the START button and open Control Panel. Click on Network and Sharing Center

B) The Network and Sharing Center window should now be visible

C) Click Change adapter settings in the left panel of the Network and Sharing Center

D) You will see the Dial-up connection displayed as a network adapter. When you right click the Dial-up adapter you will see the option “Create Shortcut“, and this will place the shortcut on your desktop.

E) The shortcut should now be visible on your desktop

QUESTION: How do I dial an international phone number on a Globalstar phone?

ANSWER: Use the “+” Dialing Standard
Dial “+”, followed by the Country_Code, followed by the rest of the phone number

Globalstar complies with the “+” Dialing Standard for dialing phone numbers. These dialing instructions and other usage tips are provided in the equipment users manual which is supplied with each Globalstar phone. Following are some simple instructions.

To dial an international phone number from a Globalstar handheld phone (GSP-1700, GSP-1600, Telit SAT550, Ericsson R290), press and hold the “0” (ZERO) key. At first, the digit ZERO will be displayed, and this will then change to the “+” symbol. Once the “+” is displayed, enter the country code and the phone number of the phone that you are trying to reach.

For example, in order to call to the USA, you would dial “+”, then “1” for the North American “country code” and then the area code and phone number of the destination. For example, the correct dialing pattern for the Globalstar USA Customer Care center is: +1-905-712-7197

All Globalstar Gateways have been configured to properly detect and interpret the “+” prefix. When a phone number is preceded by “+”, the gateway automatically analyzes the phone number and, if necessary, either translates the “+Country_Code” to the correct dialing sequence or it strips off the “+Country_Code” characters if international dialing is not required for reaching the destination phone number. The “+” dialing feature works worldwide, regardless of the type of Globalstar phone you are using.

Special Instructions for Dialing from a Fixed Globalstar Phone:

If you are using a fixed phone (Qualcomm GSP-2900 or Ericsson FAU200), you will have to prefix the international phone number with the international dialing prefix for that country which, for most countries is simply two consecutive zero digits, “00”. If this is the case, then you would dial, for example, 00905-712-7197 to reach the Globalstar USA Customer Care Center.

Note that a number of countries, for example Australia and Korea, have unique international dialing prefix codes. Therefore, if your calls are not successful, call Globalstar Customer Care to learn the correct dialing procedure for the country you are calling from.

NOTE: If you have any problems with making calls, do not hesitate to call the local Globalstar office or to call the Globalstar USA Customer Care Center. We will help you resolve any problems that you encounter.

Recommendations: Globalstar recommends that, before leaving for travel, subscribers store a few phone number in their handset’s “phone book” using the international dialing format. For example, we recommend the following:

+1-905-712-7197 GUSA Help

We also recommend storing the phone number for home, a close friend, or a primary coordination person.

ICE number (In Case of Emergency) ==> see http://www.snopes.com/crime/prevent/icephone.asp

These are not only useful phone numbers for the subscriber to have immediate access to, but the stored numbers in the phone book serve as a ready reminder of the correct dialing format. Such a reminder can make a crucial difference when dealing with the adrenaline of an emergency or the fog of jetlag.

Globalstar GSP2900 and FAU200 phones have been interfaced to many PBX systems. In most cases it is possible to simply use an existing analog interface port on the PBX. The analog port is also known as an FXO port. Sometimes, however, the PBX is not pre-configured with the analog upstream port and the customer needs to buy an analog interface card for their PBX. If an analog upstream card is not available, or if the card is overly expensive, then it is a simple task to use an inexpensive analog PBX (e.g., Panasonic KX-TA624) to interface the digital upstream port of the main PBX to the analog port of the Globalstar fixed phone.

NOTE: It is possible to use an inline splitter to provide the GSP-2900 tip/ring signal to the PBX as well as to a dedicated handset located within the user’s facility. The splitter would be placed between the GSP-2900 and the PBX. This configuration is sometimes considered a good contingency plan because, since the dedicated line bypasses the PBX, the dedicated line can be used to make and receive satellite calls even if the PBX fails or even if there is an interruption in the facility power to the PBX.

Loop Start supervision is a supervisory signal from an end terminal to a switch in response to completing the loop path.

The Globalstar “fixed phone” products, GSP-2900 and FAU200, support only loop start.

See the following excerpts from the Fixed Phone Compliance Matrix for further details.

7.2.3 Loop Start
7.2.3a The fixed phone shall detect loop start in accordance with BS 6305 and BS 6317.

7.3.1 Additional FAU Features
7.3.1a In addition to the loop calling unguarded clearing protocol that shall be ordinarily provided by the FAU, extra signalling shall be provided in support of this application:· loop current break (clear backwards);· Called Subscriber Answer indication using Line Reversal;· immediate ringing, used instead of ground start to reduce glare (call collision)
7.3.1b Call collision events shall be handled in a manner that gives priority to outgoing phone calls.

7.3.1.1 Clear Backwards
7.3.1.1a When a call is unsuccessful or cleared down by the far end, the fixed phone line interface shall deliver an appropriate tone (as determined by the network) followed by a break of the loop current. The delay from receipt of far end clear indication to loop break, and duration of the break, should be configurable. Enabling the break feature should be configurable.

7.3.3 Loop and Ground Start
7.3.3a The fixed phone shall detect loop start in accordance with BS 6305 and BS 6317.

The GSP-1700 handheld phone utilizes a USB data cable for data communications. The USB interface uses a CDC-standard USB driver.

The GSP-1720 can also use its USB interface for data communications, but this capability is rarely used.

PCs which are running Microsoft Windows operating systems will need to use a custom INF file, available here. The INF file instructs Windows XP how to communicate with the GSP-1700 device over USB.

Ensure that the GSP-1700 data cable is NOT plugged into the computer.

Download the file to a known location on the computer disk. Record the location of the file, because you will need to use this location in the next steps.

The file is named with a filename of “.txt” for security reasons. Rename the file from “.txt” to “.inf” so that Windows will recognize the file as a device driver file.

Turn on the GSP-1700. Insert the GSP-1700 data cable into the GSP-1700 and into the USB port of the computer. After a slight delay, Microsoft Windows will prompt you for the location of the INF file. Simply navigate to the location where you stored the file (during step 2, above) and press OK.

Windows will install the data port driver using standard Windows components.

Note:

The GSP-1700 USB port has several data port modes. If a GSP-1700 phone does not seem to connect with an attached computer, it is possible that the phone’s data port has been configured for the incorrect type of data port. If so, the user will have to do a one-time-only configuration of the data port. This topic is discussed in full in Technical Bulletin TB-06-05.

MAC OS X and Linux:

Apple Mac OS X and Linux operating systems will use their own standard drivers and will NOT need the Microsoft Windows “INF” file.
