PPP Logging in Windows 2000 and XP

When having trouble connecting to a server, particularly via an asynch data connection to a RAS server, it us useful to evaluate the PPP log to see if there is any problem with the authentication procedure.  Before you read the rest of this, note that it is not worthwhile to do PPP logging until you have set up a PPP dialer.  This will establish a PPP session.  If you are still having problems with the PPP session after you’ve successfully set up the PPP dialer, then feel free to do the PPP logging as described below.  In other words, there will be no PPP to log if the PPP dialer wasn’t used to set up the connection.
In cases where modems are negotiating successfully but the network connection never gets set up, the problem may be with the higher protocol layers, specifically PPP.  A log file of the PPP session sometimes reveals errors such as:
(a) the server or the client machine requesting PPP or LCP features that the other machine cannot handle
(b) timeouts
(c) protocol errors
(d) other issues

To enable PPP Logging:

For Windows 2000 and Windows XP:
1.  Open a command prompt window.
2.  Type in the following entries, each followed by <<Enter>>
set tracing PPP enable

3.  This will create a file called PPP.log on your hard disk, though the exact location will differ depending on your particular installation of Windows.

4.  Use Microsoft’s File Find tool to locate a file called ppp.log which was created in the last day.  Check the file modification date to make sure that it corresponds with when you ran your connection test.

5.  When finished, open up another command prompt window and type in the following entries:
set tracing PPP disabled

6.  Double-check to make sure that you have disabled PPP tracing because otherwise your computer will keep adding to the file every time you make a connection.
