Supported Data Protocols
Question:
We would like to maximize our telemetry payload, and so would like to eliminate as much protocol overhead as possible. Is it possible to utilize Globalstar data protocols at a lower level than TCP/IP-PPP?
Answer:
There are two types of data services offered by Globalstar:
- Direct Internet packet Data (fast setup time ~5-10 secs, standard TCP/IP)
- Asynchronous Data (longer setup time ~25-45 secs, complete freedom of protocol, compatible modem required)
If you need the quick-connect feature of the Globalstar Packet Data (#777) service, you should consider the potential benefits and tradeoffs of using the UDP protocol to eliminate some of the TCP/IP overhead.
If call setup time is not as critical to your application, another option is to use a Globalstar Asynchronous Data connection, which allows you to call into a compatible landline modem (compatibility notes HERE), and run your own specialized protocol.
