Placement of “Remote” Antenna
When selecting a location to mount a remote antenna for a Globalstar device (GSP-2900, FAU200, GCK-1410, GIK-1700), there are several issues to take into consideration:
- The primary consideration is the distance which the user would desire between the Globalstar device and the antenna. This distance will ultimately determine what type of cable is to be used. The longer the cable, the larger the cable diameter must be to maintain the same RF insertion loss.
- Next is the look angle to the sky. Ideally, one would select a location with an unobstructed view of the sky for 360 degrees to the horizon. Realizing that this is not usually possible then you should select the view with the least amount of obstruction. If you have a flat roof, try to avoid placing the antenna next to elevator penthouses, chimneys and other physical structures such as air handling units etc. Place as far as possible from neighboring taller buildings.
- If the roof is inclined, place the antenna far enough above the peak so that the roof itself does not cause signal blockage.
- If your application uses multiple antennas, separate each antenna from the adjacent one by a minimum of two feet. Three feet or one meter is the preferable separation, however we have not experienced degrading interference with only a two foot separation.
- Mount the antennas such that they are stable and not susceptible to vibration and movement in windy environments.
